We know from NEP that a human-selected current awareness service is successful. It works for the selectors. They get academic name recognition and they don't have to do a lot of work. Most selectors have been in their position for many years. Use of NEP reports is slowly but steadily increasing. Finally, NEP has raised about 2000 Euros of sponsorship last year. Thus it is starting to become financially sustainable. During the six months we can run as a Knight-funded project, we have too little time to demonstrate that bimew would be as successful as NEP. But we can investigate how to overcome the problem of generating the initial report issue. We can see whether we can find more selectors in addition to our launch team. Once we have selectors, we can find out how the machine learning works for them. In the very long run, NEP could turn out to be a precursor to a "curated selective announcement" media type.
