DELL D620 Debian problems

as told by Thomas Krichel

last update: 2007–04–08

Introduction

Here I document my problems to get Debian to run on my Dell Latitude D620 laptop. After owning this laptop since October 2006, it still is not running properly. I list the problems, hopefully I will also be able to document solutions as they become available.

Here is my configuration

I use the latest unstable stock kernel. I also tried to compile my own kernel, to no avail. Problems that I note here seem to be resistent to kernel version changes. I have tried a number of different kernels.

No sound input

This is the most important problem by far. Pretty much solved now. First, I use what it propoesd by here, namely to add the line

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

to either either /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base or /etc/modprobe.d/sound. I did not add to the former file because it was a long configuration, but added to the later. But that file is overwritten when alsaconfig is run. I finally learn from this page that I have to save this information into a file in the /etc/modutils/ directory (Eg. /etc/modutils/alsa) and run update-modules. I add it to

trabbi:/etc/modutils# tail -2 alsa-base
# ToK 2007-01-14 options
snd-hda-intel model=ref

and run update-modules. I reboot. After that I play with alsamixer. There is now a different set of controls. I reach the point where I see

trabbi:~# amixer contents
numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw---,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---,values=2,min=0,max=31,step=0
  : values=29,29
numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---,values=2,min=0,max=255,step=0
  : values=250,250
numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Mux Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---,values=2,min=0,max=4,step=0
  : values=4,4
numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw---,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---,values=2,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=0,0
numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw---,values=1,items=2
  ; Item #0 'Mic'
  ; Item #1 'Line'
  : values=0

On 2007–03–21, another reboot robs me of sound. I update the alsa-utils to 1.0.13-2, and fiddle with the settings until I reach the following that seems to work

trabbi:/home/krichel# amixer contents
numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=31,step=0
  : values=26,26
numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=255,step=0
  : values=140,140
numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Mux Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=4,step=0
  : values=4,4
numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=0,0
numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw------,values=1,items=2
  ; Item #0 'Mic'
  ; Item #1 'Line'
  : values=0

Fiddling with the settings has to be done in the following way. My initial setting, on boot, is

numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=31,step=0
  : values=29,29
numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=255,step=0
  : values=227,227
numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Mux Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=4,step=0
  : values=3,3
numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=1,1
numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw------,values=1,items=2
  ; Item #0 'Mic'
  ; Item #1 'Line'
  : values=0

In amixer, I change the sound input from "Mic" to "Line". I save the settings. They have become

numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=31,step=0
  : values=29,29
numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=255,step=0
  : values=227,227
numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Mux Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=4,step=0
  : values=3,3
numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=1,1
numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw------,values=1,items=2
  ; Item #0 'Mic'
  ; Item #1 'Line'
  : values=1

Then I fire up alsamixer again to change the "Input Source" back to "Mic". The settings are

numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=31,step=0
  : values=29,29
numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=255,step=0
  : values=227,227
numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Mux Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=4,step=0
  : values=3,3
numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
  : values=on,on
numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw------,values=2,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=1,1
numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw------,values=1,items=2
  ; Item #0 'Mic'
  ; Item #1 'Line'
  : values=0

And the sound input works now.

To automate the process, I added the following lines to /etc/rc.local.

#
# Thomas Krichel 2007-05-21
#
amixer set 'Input Source' 'Line'
amixer set 'Input Source' 'Mic'
#
# this should eliminate the sound problem on startup
#

On 2007–07–14, I updated the kernel.

krichel@trabbi:~$ uname -r
2.6.21-2-686

Fiddling with the settings again, I find that the following works with the built-in microphone in the machine.

krichel@trabbi:~$ amixer contents

CD freeze

Trying to use the CD freezes the machine completly.

Today I used the latest recommendations from Javier Arturo Rodríguez Gutiérrez

trabbi:~# echo "libata atapi_enabled=1" >> /etc/mkinitrd/modules

I finally got this to work. I am not sure if you need all of the things described here, but if you do what I note, you should be able to get it done.

I use the packages from the author.

trabbi:~# grep reichel /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://www.joachim-reichel.de/debian sid/
deb http://www.joachim-reichel.de/debian etch/
deb http://www.joachim-reichel.de/debian sarge/

I use the following packages

trabbi:~# dpkg --get-selections | grep ipw3945
ipw3945-modules-2.6.18                          deinstall
ipw3945-modules-2.6.18-3-686                    install
ipw3945-source                                  install
ipw3945-ucode-1.13                              install
ipw3945d                                        install

Install module-assistant, and sudo

module-assistant auto-install ipw3945

Then using modconf, in the net/wireless section, you install the ipw3945 module. When you install it, the wireless light starts to blink. This is a hopeful sign that the card is being recognized.

I have not yet figured out how to connect to a wireless router. My friend has no encryption.

trabbi:~# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

I run

trabbi:~# wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant -i eth2 -Dwext

which hangs on the shell.

in the meantime, I get the following syslog error.

trabbi:~# grep eth2 /var/log/syslog | tail -1

This error shows up on the console if I run wpa_supplicant before starting X.

Lousy resolution on the display

It is worse than on my old laptop, where it was 1280x1024. It's the problem I spent on most time, to the point that I am exhausted with it and now use that lousy resolution the nv driver, after compiling the drivers from the nvidia web site with several drivers but not getting any further.

Here is my current installed nvidia-related packages

nvidia-xconfig                                  install

If I add nvidia-glx, it does not fix the problem. The only way to got it to work, is the replace nidvi by the nv driver. Then I get the following log
