The first Nikolayev shipyard, the 61 Communards Shipyard, was founded in 1788.
Modern technological possibilities of the shipyard allows it to build contemporary, highly efficient and reliable vessels of all types with hull weight up to 28 000 tons. Hull construction is conducted on three building berths with partial installation and mounting of equipment and machinery simultaneously.
The total length of the wharfs that are equipped with the necessary infrastructure stretches 1,248 meters that allowing no less than 10 vessels to be outfitted simultaneously.
Production capacities of pipe machining, mechanical mounting, electrical engineering, painting and insulation, woodworking and machine building workshops are involved in the process of shipbuilding and ship repair without the need of enlisting an outside contractor.
A floating dock of 7000 tons lifting capacity allows the performance of any kind of ship repair for ships up to 140 meters in length and up to 20 meters width. Maintenance and repairing or modernization of the vessels in different parts of the world is carried out by means of mobile teams of highly qualified engineers and specialists.
In addition to shipbuilding, which comprises approximately 93.5% (in 1999) of the total production, the shipyard performs ship repair, manufacturing of the articles for the ship, and industrial and special machine building, such as licensed articles for nuclear power stations.
